2024 CPA’s Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award Goes to Mexico’s Sylvia Marcos

Dear Dr. Sylvia Marcos:

I am pleased to inform you that the Awards Committee of the Caribbean Philosophical

Association has voted for you to be the recipient of the 2024 Frantz Fanon

The Award consists of a plaque acknowledging your achievements, and it is awarded in a special ceremony, which the Caribbean Philosophical Association will be organizing at its annual meeting, which will be held this June 27–30th, 2024 in Quintana Roo, Mexico:

The theme will be “Shifting the Geography of Reason XXII: Decolonizing Epistemologies.” The event is scheduled to be in-person unless health conditions require its being moved to becoming a virtual event.

The summary statement of the award is available here:

I should like you to know that you are selected for this award not only for your extraordinary work as a psychologist and your groundbreaking writings, but also your activist work as an institution-builder and mentor to so many among the historically excluded communities across gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. As you know, Fanon was also a psychiatrist. Your work is in the spirit of his commitment to the proverbial Damned of the Earth and the importance of shifting the geography of reason in the quest for dignity, liberation, and freedom.

Winners of the award become voting members of the Caribbean Philosophical Association’s Awards Committee. What this means is that you will be consulted for your votes as we assess future nominees for this and other awards. You will also receive lifetime membership in the association and will not have to pay registration fees for attending its conferences.

The session at which you will receive the award will be announced when the Executive

Committee meets to plan out the CPA’s 2024 schedule. At this point, I simply need to know if you accept this award so I could prepare the press release for the public.
